A young Chinese national charged with causing the deaths of two men in a crash on a remote road in New Zealand's South Island has been released on bail after appearing in court, according to reports Wednesday.
The 20-year-old Chinese woman, who was in New Zealand as a visitor, had been receiving treatment for injuries she sustained in the crash before she appeared in the Alexandra District Court late Tuesday.
The woman was granted bail after appearing in court to face two counts of careless driving following the fatal accident on Monday, the Otago Daily Times newspaper reported.
She was granted interim name suppression and remanded to reappear in court next month.
The woman had been driving southwards along the Lindis Pass, in the Otago region, when her Nissan sedan was involved in a collision with two motorcycles, which were part of a group of eight to 10 bikes traveling in the opposite direction.
Two men, aged 43 and 54, on the motorcycles died in the crash.
A 26-year-old woman, who was a pillion passenger, remained in intensive care in Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition, said the report.
Police said Tuesday they were still investigating the circumstances of the crash and had a "clear picture" of what had happened, but they refused to give other details except to say that alcohol was not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
