Eleven people have been confirmed dead after fishing boat capsized off the northeastern coast of China Wednesday, local maritime authorities have announced.

Huge waves sank the boat with a 17-member crew aboard at about 2 a.m. when they were about to transfer to a bigger vessel 2 nautical miles from a fishing port in Dalian, according to a statement from the Dalian maritime bureau.

One fisherman was rescued alive. Most of the bodies were found in the inshore seabed in the ebb, rescuers said.

The identities of the 11 dead people have been confirmed and the search operation is still continuing as five remain missing.

The rescue and search operation, involving a helicopter, seven maritime patrol ships and 120 other boats, is still under way.

The only rescued person is in a stable condition and under observation in a local hospital.
