More than 100 migrant workers from Sichuan Province received their long overdue wages totaling 3.7 million yuan ($594,320) Tuesday after pleading for help on Sina Weibo last week.
The posting said Cui Dengming, a migrant worker from Sichuan, and some 100 other workers had been camped out at a construction site in Ordos, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where they had worked since July 2011.
"The water, electricity and heating were cut off. And we hope the authorities can help us return to our hometown soon," reads the posting. Despite freezing temperature, the workers had waited months to be paid after the developers ran out of money and the construction stopped.
The posting, which included Cui's mobile phone number, had been reposted 5,500 times as of late Wednesday.
Just hours after Cui posted his plea for help, it was reposted by the official Weibo account of the Sichuan provincial department of justice and by noon its director, Li Zhongbin, called Cui for additional details.
The legal aid center in Guangyuan, where most of the workers are from, sent mediators to Ordos on the afternoon of the posting. The next day they received an initial commitment that 80 percent of the salary would be promptly paid.
He Rong, deputy director of the center, said by Tuesday all overdue wages had been made and each of the workers received some 20,000 yuan.
Cui told the Global Times Wednesday that his co-workers are grateful for the help they received and most have already gone home. "I'm finally able to return to my family with pride."
