Magnitude 5.1 quake hits Xinjiang

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted a county in the Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture of Bayingolin in northwest Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 10:08 p.m. (Beijing time) on Friday, the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported.

The epicenter was monitored at 38.7 degrees north latitude and 88.0 degrees east longitude with a depth of 9 km, according to the CENC.

Jiao Yingxin, who works for the county's culture and sports bureau, told Xinhua that the quake was strongly felt and many local residents ran out of buildings.

The county government is deploying quake relief efforts and there is no immediate reports of deaths and injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the earthquake at 5.3 magnitude.

Earlier on Nov. 26, the county was jolted by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake.
