9 killed in east China pile-up

Twenty-eight vehicles were caught in a pile-up on an east China highway Friday morning amid sleet and fog, leaving nine people dead and about 60 injured, local authorities said.

The incident occurred at 8:45 a.m. on a snow-coated section of the Jinan-Guangzhou highway in Pingyin County, Shandong Province. Three people were killed on the spot while six others died after medical treatment failed, according to county government officials.

The conditions of the injured people have stabilized, the officials said, citing hospital sources.

Traffic on the highway has resumed. Investigation into the accident is under way.
