A district court ordered a local card player to pay 80,000 yuan ($12,840) in compensation to a man who broke his leg fleeing from him during an argument, Shanghai Yangpu District People's Court said Monday.
The argument began while the defendant was playing cards in a card room in Yangpu district, according to a court press release. The defendant got annoyed when the plaintiff, who was watching the game, continuously commented on his play.
The two men, neither of whom was identified, began to argue. The argument escalated into a fight, during which the plaintiff accidentally scratched the defendant in the face. At some point, the defendant picked up a chair and began to chase the plaintiff, who fell as he ran away.
The court determined that the defendant was partially responsible for the plaintiff's injury because his threats directly led the latter man to fall. The court ordered the defendant pay a portion of the plaintiff's medical expenses.
