A law enforcement team leader from the Baiyun District Branch of the Guangzhou Urban Management Bureau was sentenced to 14 years in jail for accepting large bribes, the Guangzhou Intermediate Peoples' Court said.

Wang Baolin, director of Guangzhou Chengguan's Taihe Township Law Enforcement Team, took bribes valued at 4.17 million yuan ($668,300), plus 500 grams of golden products, from a local briber surnamed Deng.

Meanwhile, 20.72 million yuan was deposited into bank accounts in Deng's name, or the accounts Wang actually controlled, while Wang was in office from July 2009 to December 2011, a press release from the court said.

Excluding the bribes Wang took and the amount that he could prove to be legal, Wang could not identify the sources for around 6.9 million yuan in deposits, the court's press release said.

Guangzhou Intermediate People's Court ruled Wang had committed the crime of bribery.

Wang was fined 400,000 yuan, while 11.07 million yuan of Wang's illegal income, plus his 500 grams of golden products, were confiscated and handed over to the exchequer.

Courts across the southern metropolis passed verdicts on 45 economic cases on Monday.

Of them, 17 involved monopolizing markets via force, 15 were for producing and selling fake products while the other 13 were for offering or accepting bribes.
