Titanic exhibition marks 100th anniversary

An exhibition featuring some 300 artifacts recovered from the wreckage of the Titanic will open Sunday at the former Expo Park.

The exhibition, which will be held at the former Greece Pavilion, commemorates the ship's disastrous sinking in the Atlantic Ocean 100 years ago.

Each ticket will have the name of one of the ship's passengers printed on it, said Lin Jun, the general manager of Shanghai Freight Care Marine Services Company, which organized the exhibition. "Visitors can then find the name on the memorial wall inside the exhibition and read about who that person was and why he or she was on the Titanic," Lin said.

The artifacts were given special care when they were shipped to Shanghai. "There are special requirements for temperature, humidity and light that the artifacts needed because they spent so many years under the sea," he said.

The exhibition will also feature a life-size staircase modeled on the grand staircase in the 1997 film Titanic.

Lin said that the design of the staircase was influenced by both the film and the actual staircase on the ship.

The exhibition has already attracted more than 25 million visitors in countries such as Australia, Thailand and Singapore. Lin said they expect to receive 150,000 to 200,000 visitors in Shanghai before the exhibition closes on April 30.
