Shanghai's Pudong New Area People's Court has sentenced a woman to seven years in prison for killing her 4-month-old daughter, local media reported Thursday.
The defendant, surnamed Gao, beat her daughter to death on July 3 following an argument with her husband, whom the court called Xiaoxi, at their home in Wanxiang town in Pudong, according to a report in the Shanghai Morning Post Thursday.
Gao got into an argument with Xiaoxi's grandmother before dawn that morning after the older woman woke her up around 5 am, the report said. Gao was furious and continued to berate the grandmother after Xiaoxi yelled at her to stop.
Around noon, Gao again got angry after her husband refused to make her lunch and left their home. When her daughter refused to drink her baby formula, Gao began to beat her.
She continued to beat her daughter whenever she stopped crying, according to the report. After five or six beatings, she found that the infant had stopped breathing.
The infant girl was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Doctors found several bruises on the head and body.
Gao came to Shanghai in 2010 and got married the following year. The family began to have financial problems two months after the baby was born. Often Gao's husband and in-laws would ignore her when she asked for money, so she argued frequently with them.
