Beijing Municipal Transportation Administration says over the past year, more than 20 million journeys were made by public transport every day, with 44% of people choosing to travel by subway and bus. That's the highest rate in the country. But in bad weather, the system often gets trouble.
Light snow leads to bad congestion. People living in Beijing are used to dealing with such weather like Friday's. They know it's not a good time to take taxi or bus, because the traffic will be chaotic. So many choose the subway instead.
The subway is crowded but at least it runs well, that's what I prefer.
Between six and seven pm, transfer stations on the Beijing subway like Fuxingmen, Xizhimen and Guomao are packed.
"We put skid-proof straw mattresses at the entrances and exits and our cleaning personnel are standing by. That will keep the passengers safe. And we add staff to guide passenger to try and relieve the congestion.
Some subway stations have passenger-flow limiting measures at busy times for safety reasons. The newly opened subway lines are part of the capital city's efforts to ease traffic congestion, especially on bad weather days.
