The Shanghai Blood Administration Office is calling on residents to donate Type AB blood as the local supply has slumped from its usual proportion of 10 percent of the total blood reserve to about 6.1 percent, the office said over the New Year's holiday.
The shortage is due to above average consumption by patients with Type AB blood. The local blood bank has transferred blood from seven suburban blood stations to cope with the shortage.
