Heavy fighting between the Myanmar Army and the rebel Kachin Independence Army is raising China's concerns that a major escalation of violence is under way on the Myanmar-China border.
The heavy fighting, which included the use of helicopters and fighter jets, took place miles outside the KIA headquarters in Laiza, a valley town separated from China's Yunnan Province, by a small river. Three shells fell into Yunnan's Yingjiang County and destroyed a civilian building, but caused no casualties.
Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that they have asked Myanmar to take immediate and effective measures to avoid the recurrence of such incidents and restore regional peace through negotiations.
