A Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) teacher died Sunday after she was hit by a university shuttle bus at its campus in Minhang district late Friday, according to Shanghai No.5 People's Hospital.
Witnesses said that the 36-year-old woman, who was not identified, was riding her bicycle at the university's district campus around 7 pm when she collided with the bus, according to a report in the Youth Daily. She taught at the university's School of Materials Science and Engineering.
Police have detained the shuttle bus's driver while they investigate the cause of the accident, according to a press release from SJTU Saturday.
Students said it was common for the shuttle buses to exceed the campus's speed limit of 10 kilometers per hour, according to the report. They also said that shuttle bus drivers frequently sped on the narrow two-lane streets, ignoring the speed bumps that the university installed following a traffic accident several years ago.
"We are working on measures to better control on-campus traffic so we can prevent tragedies like this in the futures," said Zhu Min, an SJTU spokeswoman.
The deceased teacher had already stopped breathing by the time an ambulance arrived Friday evening, according at a hospital press officer surnamed Feng. Paramedics managed to get her breathing again, but she remained in critical condition until her death.
