Fresh off her win on Saturday at the inaugural Shenzhen Open, China's Li Na was back in action earlier today in first round play at the Sydney International. Li, the champion of the event in 2011, and the 2012 runner-up was looking to keep on her momentum going.
Li, who you have to think was a little tired, would be pushed over two hard-fought sets by American Christina Mchale. Li though, pulling it out 7-6, 7-5 to reach round two.
China's Zheng Jie provided one of the major upsets of the day, defeating local favorite and 6th seed Samantha Stosur in three sets.
China's Peng Shuai was also a winner on the day. She is taking part in the Horbart International and defeated Hsieh Su-Wei of Chinese Taipei to reach round two.
