Many celebrities from all walks of life in Hong Kong and Macao have become local representatives of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which aroused public attention in their political life.
On Monday, when Hong Kong actor Stephen Chow appeared on the membership list of the Guangdong provincial committee of the CPPCC, Web users doubted the ability of Chow to act as a local CPPCC member, the Central China Television reported.
Chow said that it's an honor to be a member of the CPPCC's Guangdong committee, and he would learn from others to fulfill his responsibilities in the future.
A total of 19 members of the CPPCC's Beijing committee are from Hong Kong, including mega-rich businessman Li Ka-shing and his son Richard Lee, the People's Daily's website said on Thursday, citing a report from the Hong Kong-based newspaper Ta Kung Pao.
Beijing published a list of 761 members of the municipal committee of the CPPCC on January 10.
As well as business celebrities, some professionals from Hong Kong are also an important force in the CPPCC's Beijing committee, such as Yu Cissy, the founding president of the Hong Kong Women Doctors Association, Ta Kung Pao said.
There are 57 members from Hong Kong and 11 members from Macao among 834 members of Shanghai committee of the CPPCC, including Chief Executive of Macao Special Administrative Region Edmund Ho Hau-wah's son Justin Ho King-man, according to the Ta Kung Pao.
East China's Jiangsu Province named 795 members of the provincial committee of the CPPCC on January 9, and 56 are from Hong Kong and Macao. Many of the Hong Kong and Macao members are involved in business and have ancestral homes in Jiangsu, such as James Shing, the Asia Television executive director.
