The Chinese Medical Doctor Association Sunday strongly condemned the killing of a doctor while she was on an emergency mission on Saturday in Baotou, in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, according to a report on chinanews.com.
Zhu Yufei, a 35-year-old neurologist, was on duty at the emergency ward at the Baogang Hospital before she was allegedly hacked to death by a patient's husband after being called out for a home visit.
The doctor and another three medical workers, including one nurse and two stretcher-bearers, were sent to the given address around 2 am Saturday after receiving an emergency phone call saying that a female patient had suddenly started twitching and needed an ambulance, the Beijing Times reported.
Upon their arrival, the suspect, Li Xinglong, told the medical team that the patient was on the balcony. When Zhu rushed to see the patient, the suspect started wielding a knife he had taken from the kitchen, and after three other workers were made to leave the house, the suspect locked the door and Zhu was left alone with the alleged murderer.
Local police said the injured woman had been taken to hospital by the couple's 17-year-old son before the ambulance arrived. The couple had been fighting over purchases made online, which then escalated into domestic violence in which the wife was beaten badly.
Li has been detained by local polices.
Zhang Yanling, the head of the association, expressed distress as he heard the news and asked the association's center for rights protection to take action.
The association also said it hopes all of society can work together to ensure a safe environment for medical treatment and protect the rights of medical workers.
