Organizers are trying to stamp out pomp, speechifying and alcohol-fueled schmoozing at Beijing's annual meeting of Party members and government advisers.
In a signal that local officials are taking general secretary of the Communist Party of China Xi Jinping's call for more efficiency and less corruption in the Party seriously, a giant LED sign is announcing the number of people from each district delegation who are skipping meetings during the two sessions, which started Tuesday.
The Legal Mirror reports representatives have been asked to bring their own cups, bottled water is not being provided, and tea breaks during meetings have been banned. Work reports must be shorter, and contain less jargon.
Banners with slogans, bunting, green plants and flowers have been banned, and souvenirs have been forbidden. Committees and groups are not allowed to treat others to dinner.
The two sessions, with delegates from local people representing various sectors of society and from the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, is scheduled to end Friday.
On the first day, real estate mogul Pan Shiyi encouraged limiting vehicles during polluted days, and urged Beijingers to ride bicycles more frequently. Yu Kai, who drove a taxi for 20 years, proposed raising the flagfall in taxis from 10 yuan, according to the Legal Mirror.
