Weather adds to holiday travel troubles

China's public transportation network is getting increasingly crowded as hundreds of millions journey home as part of the Spring Festival travel rush. Yet poor weather conditions in some regions have made the trips quite an adventure for passengers.

Heavy fog in Hebei, Henan, Shanxi Shaanxi and Sichuan Provinces has lead to the temporary closure of expressways, as well as delay for certain high-speed trains. Meanwhile snow and sleet have hit north and central China, affecting traffic on roads in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces. Expressways in Shandong were also temporarily closed Sunday morning because of heavy snow. The airport and long-distance bus station in Shandong's capital city, Jinan, halted operations until Sunday afternoon. Residents in these regions were warned to take precautions when driving on the icy roads.

According to forecasts, most parts of Central and East China will continue to experience snow or rain in the next two days. That will likely put even more pressure on the country's transportation system as the travel season continues.
