A total of 62 websites and several blog and microblog accounts were shut down in China's fresh crackdown on online pornography that started late last month, according to the State Internet Information Office.
The websites were closed for posting pornographic images, articles, films, self-made videos and advertisements for prostitutes, according to a statement released Thursday by the office.
Some of the websites were said to feature pop-up windows with advertisements containing vulgar content, as well as pornographic content and ads for sex-related drugs, the statement said.
According to the office, most of the websites were not registered with related government departments and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has been advised to punish telecommunication companies who have provided services for the websites.
"While continuing the crackdown on online porn is a key part of the office's work, we're fully aware that such a crackdown is complicated and requires long-term efforts in order to protect the public interest and the healthy growth of young people," said the statement.
The office urged local telecommunication administrations to strengthen management and strictly punish people who run porn-related websites, as well as those who provide them with Internet service.
