The top of an irrigation water duct at the Quting Reservoir in Hongtong County in north China's Shanxi Province has caved in. This led to the partial collapse of its dam walls, causing some flooding. Local officials say residents near the reservoir have been evacuated. No casualties have been reported yet.
The Ministry of Water Resources has sent a work team to deal with the flooding. And the local government has launched a plan to tackle the situation.
PLA troops and paramilitary police have also been sent to the scene to help with rescue work. Emergency workers are using sand bags and other materials to seal the breach in order to save residents' homes.
The irrigation duct was built in 1959. Local officials says the structure's age may have contributed to the collapse.
