The chairman of the mainland-based China Center for International Economic Exchanges on Friday called for enhanced cross-Straits cooperation to cope with emerging challenges after the global financial crisis.

Zeng Peiyan, the chairman, made the remarks while attending a gathering of over 200 business leaders and entrepreneurs from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Zeng said the world economy is slowly recovering from the global financial crisis, which has brought both opportunities and challenges that the mainland and Taiwan need to address together.

He urged greater efforts to strengthen cross-Straits policy coordination, further boost practical cooperation and let entrepreneurs from both the mainland and Taiwan play a bigger role in promoting cross-Strait ties.

He also noted that the trend of peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, the pattern of mutually-beneficial cross-Straits economic cooperation and the direction of institutionalized cross-Strait consultations will all remain unchanged.

Zeng arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday for a five-day visit.
