Delegates to China's top political advisory body are chosen based on guidelines on diversity and nomination procedures. The CPPCC aims to have a wide representation of people from all walks of life, as it influences policy directions. It has become a trend for the country's most influential figures to get a seat. And some people are starting to question the growing numbers of celebrities turning political advisors.
This scene is repeated every year during China's Political Season. The media spotlight falls on celebrities.
Jiang Kun, a cross talk comedian and CPPCC member said, "China needs a beautiful country, the world needs a beautiful China as well."
Film director Chen Kaige said, "Ang Lee does not pose any pressure for Chinese film directors."
Some criticize the media for being star-struck.
CPPCC member Mei Xingbao said, "Stars have many other chances to speak their concerns. The media should give their attention to those advisors from the grass roots."
But many of the celebrities disagree.
"I think I've done a great job," said singer Han Hong.
Jiang Kun said, "Celebrities have greater influence and a solid base in society. They have a better position to speak for the public."
This year's CPPCC meeting shines with big names including actor Jacky Chan, director Stephen Chow and basketball legend Yao Ming.
Chen Sisi is a newcomer for the Culture sector. She was the first Mainland singer to hold a concert in Taiwan. She sees culture as a unifying force.
Chen Sisi said, "I suggest the relevant departments make certain policies to encourage private performing troupes to Taiwan. This is to strengthen the cultural identification of the audience in Taiwan with the Mainland."
Chen Sisi says people should not be too critical of celebrities, but celebrities should not get an automatic pass.
She said, "I should acknowledge that although many are among the elite of their professions, their knowledge of politics isn't sufficient for profound perspectives on social problems. So, we should upgrade our level of thinking, to better carry out our responsibilities as political advisors."
Chen Sisi and other members have a five-year term, and they will be scrutinized by the public.
Professor Yu Jianrong believes the imperfect selection procedures have led the public to doubt celebrities' abilities to live up to their commitment.
Professor Yu Jianrong from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said, "We need to rethink the composition of the political advisory body. People should not take the CPPCC membership simply as an honor. The organization should become the agency of the government think tanks and a channel to voice people's livelihood. "
Reports have been leaked that some movie and sports stars remain silent during the sessions, and some even refuse to attend. A big name can help a cause. But many Chinese believe that the country's top political advisors should be chosen on the basis of their ability and willingness to do their job - engaging in politics. In short, the CPPCC should not become a club for celebrities.
