Xinjiang cracks 1,929 drugs cases in 2012

Northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region cracked 1,929 drugs cases last year, regional government authorities said Tuesday.

In 2012, Xinjiang police seized 2,000 drug-related criminal suspects, said Xiong Xuanguo, secretary of the Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs of the CPC Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee.

Police in Xinjiang also focused efforts on anti-drug trafficking from the Golden Triangle and Golden New Moon regions that enter the country's western border region, Xiong told at a drug control conference in the regional capital Urumqi.

Last year, Xinjiang police cracked 46 cross-border drug cases and captured 53.97 kg of drugs.

The Golden Triangle, the border area between Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, and the Golden New Moon, the long border region between Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran, are known for drugs production and trafficking.

Local authorities also helped drug users quit their addictions by sending them into forced isolation treatment centers and offering them community-based rehabilitation programs.

By the end of 2012, Xinjiang had set up 20 employment bases to offer professional training and jobs for drug users that had been rehabilitated.

The regional government will also boost spending on rehabilitation programs and offer reformed addicts with subsidies and public welfare jobs, Xiong said.
