To many Chinese, March the 5th is the annual occasion to commemorate a young soldier, Lei Feng, an iconic figure who has influenced Chinese people for half a century. Selflessness, modesty and dedication -- those are the qualities attributed to Lei Feng, and even today, youngsters are still encouraged to follow his example. We head now to an exhibition in Beijing and find out more about this legendary Good Samaritan.

Portraits, military badges and old photos. These are among the more than 800 items to be seen here.

Also on display are poems and words of tribute by late Chinese leaders such as Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi.

All of it was provided by Dong Xingxi. He's an avid collector of memorabilia related to China's larger-than-life cultural figure, Lei Feng.

Dong said, "I have been collecting these items for 24 years. Some are from my friends and relatives, and some were bought from second-hand markets."

Lei Feng was a young Chinese soldier in the 1960s. He is known for devoting almost all his spare time and money to helping the needy.

Mr. Dong also served in the army when he was young, but that's only part of the reason why he's such a fan.

He said, "Lei Feng is a good example to us. I hope more and more people get to know his story and learn from him, and do more to help others...just like Lei Feng did."

Dong Xingxi has held the exhibit since 2009, and says he will continue to do so. For him, the spirit of Lei Feng lives on -- and may be more important now than ever.
