Wilderness under the Stars: Works of Liu Wei @ Line Gallery
Liu Wei readily admits that he felt bewildered when presented with the challenge of creating the more than a dozen paintings for this exhibit. But he translates that feeling beautifully into his works, many of which feature a lost little boy at the center of swirling, fantastical landscapes and creatures. In Special Delivery, the boy, illuminated and innocent, stands with his bike at the mouth of a dark, enchanted forest. In Amble Along, he sits atop a brilliantly white unicorn in an otherwise nightmarish thicket. The painting style resembles the softened realism of a children's book. In Cypress, the same little boy wears a beard and carries an artist's palette. Seems Liu couldn't fully escape into his own fantasy realm.
