A district court has granted a divorce to a local woman who married a Canadian citizen in 2008 after they went more than two years without seeing each other, Changning District People's Court said Thursday.
The 33-year-old woman, who was unidentified, met the man online in the beginning of 2008, according to a court press release. The man flew to China later that year and the two were married before the start of the New Year.
"They lived together for about a month and discovered that they could not get along because of their different personalities and habits," said Yao Bo, a press officer for Changning District People's Court.
The couple had a big fight after the woman caught him smoking marijuana, Yao said. Soon after, the man flew back to Canada.
He returned to Shanghai in October 2009, but it did not improve their relationship. He went back to Canada the next month and never returned.
The woman filed for the divorce so that she could move on with her life, the court said.
The court ruled that because the couple had been separated for more than two years, they were in effect divorced, so it granted the woman's request.
"Young couples should learn more about each other before they get married," Yao told the Global Times.
