Convicts at Beijing Women's Prison, the only one of its kind in the capital, have more "privileges" than their male counterparts, correction officers said.
The facility is divided into seven blocks for inmates with different physical conditions, with the eldest being 79 years old and the youngest 19.
Women are allowed to put on makeup during festivals and take showers once a week, while older inmates with gray or white hair can have their hair dyed.
Correction officers have organized 23 interest groups, including painting, sewing, massaging and nail beauty. They also have an art festival every two years.
Li Ruihua, the warden, said inmates receive a physical check every year and are encouraged to take part in technical examinations for national certificates.
For women with marriage problems, the prison provides female lawyers who help them cope with property distribution, debt disputes and answer related questions.
