In Miami, China's Li Na had a headline match-up at the Sony Open as she took on Serena Williams for a place in the semi-finals. Li, looking to stop Serena from making history at the Masters event. A win for the American would see her tie the tournament record for most wins by a woman set by another five-time champion, the great Steffi Graf.
Li would struggle with her serve on the day. The Chinese had seven double-faults, with three giving Williams her only break points. Williams would take advantage and go on to take the first set by a 6-3 scoreline.
Williams was also having problems with her serve as Li jumped out to a 5-2 second set lead. However, Serena would rally to force a tiebreak.
The second set tiebreak would be close throughout but Serena would go up 6-5 late and with a chance to close out Li, her forehand passing shot cross-court on the final point would get the job done. Williams will have a chance to break Graf's tournament win record in the semi-finals.
