A man involved in a toxic gelatin scandal last year in north China's Hebei Province was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Friday, according to a court ruling.

Song Haixin, the legal representative of Xueyang Glair Gelatin Factory, was handed a prison term of 17 years for producing and selling fake and inferior products, concealing accounting documents and writing false value-added tax invoices, according to the Fucheng County People's Court verdict.

Song was also fined 2 million yuan (319,035 U.S. dollars), according to the ruling.

The scandal was exposed by a report broadcast on China Central Television (CCTV), which showed that the plant provided industrial gelatin made from industrial leather waste to medicine capsule production companies in April 2012.

After the report was aired, Song ordered others to transfer goods and documents in order to cover up the scandal.

Song was also found to have fabricated value-added tax invoices worth 1.93 million yuan, according to the court.
