A young woman says she has been given monetary compensation from her alma mater seven years after she was allegedly raped as a student there.
In 2004, when Huang Qiaozhen was a sophomore at Gannan Normal University in Jiangxi Province, she accused a teacher surnamed Dai of raping her. After an investigation, the police found no evidence that could verify the crime and withdrew the case. Huang attempted suicide in April, news portal jxnews.com.cn reported Sunday. Huang made an agreement with the university that she would not pursue legal action and continued her studies.
However, in March 2012, Huang became vocal about the incident again. She posted about it online and put up posters and handed out around and on campus. She also threatened to take revenge on those involved in the case.
The university reacted by saying that her aggressive behavior was totally unreasonable and it reserved the right to take legal action. Huang was held in administrative detention, according to jxnews.com.cn.
"I was hopeless," she was quoted by the website as saying. "The university ended up making me an offer. Since the matter has been resolved and I have my compensation, I can let it go. I want a fresh start."
A publicity official who requested anonymity said Huang had reflected on her actions and apologized and that the school decided not to pursue legal action out of principle. The official did not verify the facts of the compensation agreement, saying only that leaders of the college were in charge of it.
