An interpretation of the term "Chinese dream," brought up by President Xi Jinping, was released by the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee on Friday.

In the interpretation, the phrase "Chinese dream" means to uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics, which it notes is a fundamental guarantee and is a road that has deep historical origins and realistic foundations.

In addition, the realization of the "Chinese dream" must be carried forward with patriotism, reform and innovation, as those are the core spirits of the nation and of the time, and which can also unite forces in China.

According to the interpretation, concrete measures have been put forward, and the municipality will start to compile theory books to explain the term. Related TV series, stage dramas and music are also on the way, including other art forms.

It also pledged to reach all communities including old cadres and retired personnel. Teenagers are targeted as the key group to combine youngsters' individual dreams with the great "Chinese dream."

The interpretation by Beijing authorities also compares the "Chinese dream" to the "American dream," as the latter puts more emphasis on entrepreneurial spirit and personal accomplishment, while the former focuses more on national pride and China's revival.

The term "Chinese dream" has become a buzz word recently, as it was mentioned by President Xi several times on significant occasions.

Xi first brought up the term at his official debut after the 18th CPC National Congress in November.

He later mentioned it in his speech at the National People's Congress on March 17 and in the keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan Province on April 7.

"To realize national rejuvenation has been the greatest dream for us in modern times," said Xi. Relatively broad in its connotation, the term is open to various interpretations and discussions.
