A Guangdong Province man has been sentenced to four months of detention for stealing packages from a motorcycle deliveryman and then trying to scam the recipient, Pudong New Area People's Court said Tuesday.
In January, the defendant, surnamed Zhuang, stole two packages from the back of a parked motorcycle while its driver, surnamed Wen, was away on a delivery, according to a court press release.
Wen reported the theft to police after he returned to the vehicle and discovered the packages were missing. The packages contained health products worth about 1,805 yuan ($295).
After stealing the packages, Zhuang came up with the idea of posing as a deliveryman to collect the price of the items from the woman who ordered them. He called her and explained that she would have to pay him in cash because his point-of-sale (POS) machine was broken.
The woman, surnamed Yang, asked to postpone the delivery because she did not have enough cash with her. Shortly later, she got a call from Wen, who wanted to apologize for losing her packages.
Realizing that the first call was from the thief, she got together with Wen and the police to arrange a trap. She called Zhuang and told him she had the cash and asked him to deliver the packages. Police officers arrested him when he arrived.
The court found Zhuang guilty of theft. Considering that he returned the packages and cooperated with the investigation, the court gave him a lenient sentence, according to the press release.
