Two young people committed suicide late Tuesday by jumping one after another into a river in Pudong New Area, local media reported.
One of the jumpers, an 18-year-old girl surnamed Zhang, an Anhui Province native, had gone to the river's edge and called her boyfriend to tell him she planned to jump in the river.
When her boyfriend arrived, Zhang had already disappeared into the river. Later, one of her colleagues, a 19-year-old man surnamed Zhu from Henan Province, also jumped into the river at the same spot.
Police said initial investigation showed that the three, who all worked at the same company, were embroiled in a "emotional dispute."
The case remains under investigation.
