Urbanization in China is undergoing rapid development. Figures show that in the ten years between 1990 and the year 2000, urban areas grew to around 22,000-square-kilometers from an area of around 12,000 square kilometers, an increase of just over 78%.
In 2010, this jumped to 40,000-square-kilometers, an increase of more than 85%. Urbanization in Yongcheng City in Henan Province boasts the fastest rate of growth in the country, with urban areas increasing more than 20 times in size over the last 20 years.
