Police in an east China city have launched a hunt for a man who allegedly poured acid on a boy and disfigured him on Thursday morning.

Police in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, are offering 10,000 yuan (1,613 US dollars) in reward for information leading to the capture of the suspect, 51-year-old Cai Shilin.

Cai is suspected of pouring acid on an 11-year-old fourth-grader from Chalu Primary School, as the boy was on his way to school around 7:40 a.m.

The child's face was seriously burnt and he was hospitalized. He remains under treatment in the intensive care unit of Nanjing Children's Hospital.

An initial investigation indicated that Cai took revenge after breaking up with the boy's divorced mother, whose name was not disclosed.

Police in Nanjing have set up a special team for the capture of Cai, who remains on the run.
