'Star Trek' sequel rules China's box office

"Star Trek Into Darkness," a sci-fi action adventure sequel by J.J Abrams, has knocked domestic production "American Dreams in China" off the top spot at the Chinese box office charts.

Since its debut on May 28, "Star Trek Into Darkness" has raked in 164 million yuan (about 26.8 million U.S. dollars) as of June 2, China Film News reported on Tuesday.

"American Dreams in China," a drama from Hong Kong director Peter Chan, was a respectable number 2 with 112.5 million yuan in the week. The film, telling a dramatic story of young entrepreneurs founding an English language training service, stayed atop the box office charts for two weeks.

Domestic cartoon film "Happy Little Submarine 3: Rainbow Treasure" came in third by taking 43.4 million yuan since it was released in theaters on May 31. It tells the story of fishermen's fight against colonists.

Not far behind was "The Croods," a cartoon set in the Stone Age. It took in 35.7 million yuan in the week.

With 29.5 million yuan in ticket sales, "The Adventures of Sinbad 2013," another domestic cartoon set in ancient Arabian countries, landed at fifth place.
