Ice cream sold in Beijing contains up to 14 kinds of additives, and many parents are worried their children are eating additives rather than ice cream, the Beijing Morning Post reports.
Peng Shanshan, a professor of food safety, explains that the additives are used mainly to enhance the color, taste and shape of ice cream. But Dong Jinshi, another expert, believes that the consumption of these additives by children whose bodies have not fully developed could lead to allergies, diarrhea and even some diseases.
According to a report conducted by iearth, an environmental NGO, about 26 percent of Chinese kids eat at least one serving of ice cream per day.
