China's national college entrance exam, the Gaokao, is in its second day. Students across the country are going to sit their English exam in this afternoon. In order to make sure students in rural areas have the same opportunity to go to college as students in cities, a targeted enrollment plan has been expanded in rural areas.
In 2012, the government give 10 thousand places to poor communities in central and western provinces, and 20 thousand more vacancies have been made available this year. The number of rural students enrolled at key universities is expected to increase by 8.6 percent this year.
In 2012, the rate of enrollment for rural students at university reached 59.1 percent, almost the same as city students.
