Beijing (CNS) -- China's central budget is expected to raise three billion yuan (488.3 million US dollars) in lottery funds to support the construction of 100,000 rural nursing homes over the next three years, according to officials at a conference held Thursday by the Civil Affairs Ministry and the Ministry of Finance.
The special lottery funds have been designated to accelerate the development of the rural elderly care system across the country, according to Vice Finance Minister Wang Bao'an.
Wang also called for financial institutions at all levels to channel funding for the construction of rural nursing homes in a timely manner, as well as create plans in line with local conditions.
The nursing homes will help protect the rights and interests of rural senior citizens, said Dou Yupei, vice minister of Civil Affairs.
Construction plans for the nursing homes will be developed by provincial civil affairs departments, Dou added.
