Beijing (CNS) -- China has overtaken the United States to become the world's largest wind power producer, according to the State Grid Corp of China (SGCC) on Thursday.
SGCC, the biggest power-network operator in China by market share, has become the world's largest power grid for power installation and the fastest-growing power grid for wind and solar power.
The wind power and photovoltaic power generation industry has seen rapid growth in recent years, with total installed capacity reaching 56.8 million kilowatts and 3.3 million kw, respectively, in 2012.
In the same year, China's new energy industry was hard hit by a double whammy as wind power and photovoltaic power companies in China experienced a sharp downturn as a result of the proposed "double reverse" (anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations) targeting Chinese solar and telecom products initiated by the US and the EU.
The State Grid has been stepping up power grid construction across the country to optimize resource distribution. In 2012, the total installed on-grid hydropower capacity registered a year-on-year increase of 26.3 percent, reaching 551.8 billion kWh.
By 2012, 17 pumped-storage power plants were built (4 under construction), with total installed power capacity and power capacity under construction amounting to 14.1 million kw and 4.1 million kw, respectively.
