San Francisco (CNS) — In his commencement speech to the class of 2013 at Stanford University on Sunday, the mayor of New York City addressed the urgent need for Washington to issue green cards to graduates with degrees in fields such as science, technology, mathematics and engineering.
"We must allow any university graduate with an advanced degree in an essential field to obtain a green card – and a chance to help us grow our economy. We must allow these students to stay here and be part of our future or we will watch our future disappear with them," said Michael Bloomberg.
"Every child brought to this country illegally should have the opportunity to apply for financial aid and go to college - they have done nothing wrong.
"Every entrepreneur who wants to come here to start a business and create jobs in this country should have the chance to do so. They are the future leaders of major corporations that will employ millions of Americans.
"American immigrants built the world's most innovative economy - and if it is to keep growing, if we're going to keep the American Dream alive, we need those in Washington to fix this broken system - and fix it now," said Bloomberg.
A total of 5,081 graduates received degrees (1,701 bachelor's degrees were conferred, along with 2,325 master's degrees and 1,055 doctoral degrees) from the university.
About 30 percent of the graduates had attended college on student visas, according to the mayor.
