The operation started around ten Thursday morning. It aims to collect fluid samples from under the sea. Professor Yang Qunhui, from Tongji University became the first female passenger onboard the submersible.

Yang's study focus is on marine life, geochemistry, and marine sediments. She has to wear pure cotton clothing to keep warm and avoid static electricity.

Meanwhile, Yang has also taken a recording device with her to keep records of important information discovered during the operation. The current dive is expected to last for six hours.
