Around half of the 7,000 self-service buses owned by Shanghai Ba-shi Public Transportation (Group) Co Ltd have been equipped with machines that can count and detect fake coins, local media reported.
The move is expected to save the company 1.82 million yuan ($297,045) each year.
Cash accounts for 15 percent to 20 percent of the fares on self-service buses.
