China's Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP) on Friday urged offices nationwide to enhance efforts to avoid cases in which people are unjustly charged.

Procuratorates at all levels should be prudent about their approval of suspect arrests and strengthen the supervision over police in their procedures of case filing and investigation, said Cao Jianming, the procurator-general of the SPP.

From 2009 and 2012, procuratorates nationwide decided not to ratify the arrests of 594,315 people, mostly due to a lack of evidence or lack of necessity to do so, according to the SPP.

A total of 3,799,424 arrests were approved in the same period, or an annual average of 900,000.
