A spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday congratulated a Chinese candidate on being elected director-general of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
China's Vice Finance Minister Li Yong was elected director-general of the UNIDO in a board session held Monday. Li will be officially appointed director-general of the UNIDO at the General Conference on June 28.
"We are here to extend our congratulations to Mr. Li, while saying thanks to all countries for their support and trust," spokeswoman Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing.
Hua said Li has long been engaged in cooperation on international development and has a good professional background as well as rich experiences.
"We believe Mr. Li is able to lead the UNIDO Secretariat to better serve all member states, while boosting sustainable development and international industrial development cooperation at the same time," she said.
Hua noted that the Chinese government places great importance on the UNIDO and has cooperated with the organization effectively.
The Chinese government will support the work of the new director-general, so as to promote the UNIDO's role in global industrial development, she added.
