Two men were sentenced to criminal detention for worker's compensation fraud, Jiading district police said Thursday.
The scheme started when one of the men, surnamed Guo, agreed to let the other break his toe with a hammer so he could cheat companies out of worker's compensation benefits. Guo then went looking for jobs.
He hid the injury until he was hired and then engineered an accident to make it appear that he injured his foot on the job. One company agreed to pay Guo 2,000 yuan ($325) in compensation. However, the ruse fell apart when Guo tried to get a company in Jiading district to pay him 20,000 yuan.
