Shanghai (CNS) -- Former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger paid a visit on Tuesday to the Center for American Studies at Fudan University, accompanied by China's former foreign minister Tang Jiaxuan, who graduated from the school.
Kissinger started off on a humorous tone, saying "The host always reminds you of my age, as if being 90 is one of my achievements. But I was once as young as you."
However, Kissinger admitted that he doesn't understand the lifestyles of modern young people: "I wonder how young people have time to do things, as they are said to have hundreds of friends on social networks."
Kissinger then answered questions from students on Sino-US relations. He said China's GDP is growing rapidly and that the United States should get used to it. "The Americans have to make efforts, instead of complaining in their chairs."
Neither China nor the US can enforce their views on each other, he said, adding that both should focus on building a new type of relationship "based on co-operation and partnership."
Kissinger said he seldom saw skyscrapers when he first came to China in 1971, and that China's achievements have been unbelievable since the reform and opening-up. Innovation is the main factor to maintaining economic strength, he added.
Kissinger, who served as the US national security adviser and secretary of state, is known as the architect of China-US relations.
