A local man stabbed his girlfriend to death Monday evening at a supermarket in Songjiang district, local media reported Tuesday.
The 35-year-old suspect, surnamed Gu, attacked the 25-year-old victim, surnamed Yu, around 6 pm on the second floor of a Walmart supermarket, according to a report in the Shanghai Morning Post.
Gu repeatedly stabbed Yu before she collapsed to the floor in a pool of blood, a witness told the Shanghai Morning Post. While bystanders were calling the police, Gu turned the knife on himself and fell to the ground.
Both Yu and Gu were rushed to Songjiang Hospital affiliated with the School of Medicine at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, according to a report in the Shanghai Morning Post. Yu died at the hospital.
It was unclear where Gu cut himself or how seriously he was injured.
Gu and Yu had been in a romantic relationship for a year following their divorces. Both lived in the district, the report said.
Police have not offered information about Gu's motive. He was in stable condition Monday, the report said.
Yu's 3-year-old daughter has been put under the care of her grandmother, the report said.
