H7N9 patient in critical condition at Beijing hospital

Doctors say a man diagnosed with the H7N9 bird flu virus is in a critical condition in a Beijing hospital. The man from Hebei province was diagnosed with the infection on Saturday at Beijing's Chaoyang Hospital.

Preliminary investigation has found that the patient visited a market near his home where live poultry was being sold. The market has been closed after the H7N9 virus was found in the drainage and poultry excrement there.

All nine people who were in close contact with the man have been kept under clinical observation and have not shown symptoms of the infection.
