Vice President Li Yuanchao on Tuesday urged youth from Hong Kong to support the principle of "one country, two systems" and inherit patriotic traditions.
Li made the remarks while meeting nearly 1,000 youth representatives from Hong Kong who are visiting the mainland as part of an activity aimed to help them understand the country better.
Li said it is helpful for Hong Kong's young people to learn more about the mainland by seeing the country's development and know more about the country's history.
The activity "Getting Together Under the National Flag" is sponsored by the All-China Youth Federation, the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Hong Kong S.A.R and youth organizations from Hong Kong.
Li said Hong Kong's development after its return to the motherland indicates that the principle of "one country, two systems" has been a success and should be carried on.
Li said most Hong Kong residents are patriotic, adding that this patriotism is the foundation of the principle of "one country, two systems."
Hong Kong's destiny is closely connected with that of the mainland, Li said, adding that he hopes Hong Kong's youth will inherit patriotic traditions.
